What is character-grade lumber?

When lumber is considered "character grade" it is milled for its appearance instead of being milled following traditional lumber grading standards.

Traditional mills pride themselves on straight grain lumber with no knots and no "drying defects". Traditional mills will also "steam" their lumber so all the colors meld together.

At Hewins we celebrate the natural beauty and uniqueness of our natural resources. That's why all of our in-stock lumber is milled and dried for its character.

Our walnut is not steamed in the traditional fashion. It's meticulously dried to bring out all of the beautiful, natural colors of the lumber.

And what others consider a "drying defect", we consider the natural beauty of the lumber. That's why we pride ourselves on having some of the best spalted maple in the country. The unique spalting lines in the wood give our lumber rich character and beauty that you simply will not find from a traditional sawmill.

While other mills might shun "character" we lean into it so our clients can have truly unique lumber, at scale, for their products.

Black Walnut

Black walnut is a luxurious and highly sought-after hardwood known for its rich, dark color and exquisite grain patterns. Native to North America, the heartwood of the black walnut tree ranges from a deep chocolate brown to a purplish-black hue, while its sapwood is typically a lighter, creamy color. This stark color contrast adds to its allure, creating a striking visual impact in any application.

Renowned for its durability and strength, black walnut is often used in high-end furniture making, cabinetry, flooring, and decorative accents. Its natural luster and rich tones deepen over time, enhancing its beauty and increasing its value as it ages.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, black walnut is also prized for its workability and stability, making it a favorite choice for both craftsmen and designers seeking a timeless and elegant material for their creations.

Spalted Maple

Spalted maple is a stunning and unique wood prized for its intricate patterns and distinctive character. It is a type of maple wood that has undergone a natural process of decay, resulting in dark lines and streaks that weave through its pale, creamy-colored grain. These striking patterns are created by fungal growth within the wood, which adds depth and visual interest to each piece.

The contrast between the dark spalting lines and the light background creates a mesmerizing visual effect, reminiscent of fine marble or intricate lacework. No two pieces of spalted maple are exactly alike, making each one a truly one-of-a-kind work of art.

Despite its appearance, spalted maple is still a durable and strong wood, making it a popular choice for high-end woodworking projects, furniture making, and decorative accents. Its natural beauty and unique aesthetic make it a sought-after material for those looking to add a touch of elegance and sophistication to their creations.

Spalted Hackberry

Spalted hackberry, native to North America, is a distinctive hardwood prized for its light yellowish-gray to pale brown base color interwoven with dark, dramatic lines caused by fungal spalting. This natural process creates intricate, one-of-a-kind patterns, though it may also soften the wood, often requiring stabilization for durability. Hackberry has a coarse texture and irregular grain, which can make it slightly challenging to work, but it finishes beautifully, highlighting the unique spalting. Commonly used for turned objects, decorative bowls, furniture accents, and small woodworking projects, spalted hackberry is sought after for its striking appearance and creative potential in fine woodworking.
